Celebrating Two Decades of Progress: Since its founding, Earth Conservancy has been dedicated to reclaiming mine-scarred lands, improving water quality, and fostering sustainable economic development in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Our mission has led to the transformation of thousands of acres of abandoned coal lands into green spaces, residential areas, and commercial sites.
In 2014, we produced a video showcasing our key milestones. Over the years, Earth Conservancy has:
- Reclaimed nearly 2,000 acres of abandoned mine land
- Treated polluted waters through two Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) remediation projects
- Created recreational spaces, including trails and conservation lands
- Partnered with government agencies and local organizations to promote environmental restoration
Looking Forward: Beyond our past successes, we continue working toward a greener future. Current initiatives include:
- The Newport North reclamation study, which is evaluating AML features across 3,000 acres to inform potenial future development.
- Stream restoration efforts on the Nanticoke Creek to improve water quality and restore riparian buffers.
- Targeting our last 700 acres of land for recreation and conservation, which will put us over our 10,000 acres of greenspace goal.
- Continuing support of our large-scale yard and leaf waste Compost Facility, which supports sustainable land use and reduces waste in Luzerne County.
